About This Spot

Stepping into Bar Boulud feels like entering a Parisian bistro carefully transposed to the heart of New York’s Upper West Side. It’s a place where the hum of quiet conversations blends effortlessly with the clink of glasses and the soft scrape of cutlery against fine china. The atmosphere strikes a delicate balance between elegant and welcoming, inviting diners to settle in without the weight of formality. Whether you come bustling in before a nearby performance or linger over a late evening glass of wine, there’s a gentle, unhurried rhythm that encourages savoring the moment.

The mood here leans toward relaxed refinement, with attentive service that quietly fades into the backdrop, letting the food and company take center stage. Bar Boulud’s charm lies in its thoughtful details — the semi-private outdoor seating adds a whisper of intimacy, while inside, the space feels lively yet reserved, drawing a diverse crowd who appreciate the intersection of conviviality and calm.

The menu feels like a love letter to French traditions, reimagined for today’s diner. You’ll find yourself drawn to the rich textures and familiar comforts — earthy escargots, delicate charcuterie, steaming bowls of French onion soup, or a flawlessly cooked steak-frites. These aren’t just dishes; they’re moments of connection, each bite inviting conversation and discovery. Desserts, too, offer surprises — like a lush chocolate tart that lingers on the palate, balancing the meal with just the right touch of indulgence.

Bar Boulud’s proximity to cultural landmarks subtly influences its cadence — it’s a prelude to an evening at the opera or a quiet, celebratory stop after a night out. The experience embraces a certain timelessness, blending the old-world charm of a bistro with the pulse of a city that never stops exploring. Here, every visit feels a little like coming home to a familiar yet ever-evolving neighborhood treasure.

Bar Boulud, although called a "casual bistro" by Chef Daniel Boulud, feels more like a fine dining spot. The atmosphere is elegant yet lively, with a welcoming vibe that avoids being too formal. Most of the guests are older (like me), but the mood is still relaxed and fun. We visited Bar Boulud before seeing Firebird at the New York City Ballet, which is right next door. It's a great location for those attending events at Lincoln Center, making it perfect for a pre-show meal or a post-performance drink to celebrate. The service here is top-notch—attentive and professional, but not stiff or overbearing. The menu features a variety of pâtés and terrines, along with classic French bistro dishes made with great skill and care. Some of our favorite dishes included: • La Soupe à l'Oignon Gratinée: This French onion soup was incredible. The broth was rich and flavorful, with perfectly caramelized onions, lots of melted Gruyère cheese, and crispy baguette croutons. • Le Steak Frites: This classic dish was done perfectly. The steak was cooked just right, and the fries were crispy on the outside and tender inside. The Bordelaise sauce was a nice touch. • La Salade Niçoise: A fresh, light option to balance the other dishes. The seared tuna was excellent, and the salad had fresh veggies, olives, a perfectly cooked egg, and haricots verts, all tied together with a smooth aïoli. Overall, Bar Boulud is a wonderful place to enjoy a refined meal in a lively, relaxed setting. It's an especially great choice for anyone attending events at Lincoln Center. Be sure to make a reservation.

We had dinner there with friends just before going to opera (it’s very conveniently located right by the opera house) We ordered beef tartar, pate, snails , salad with fennel and chocolate cake for desert. Service was very nice and attentive. Highly recommend , especially if you are looking for the place dinner before the opera.

The quality of the food served at Bar Boulud has not changed a bit over the years. It is simply exquisite. I highly recommend the escargots and the trout dish. Also, I like the semi-privacy of the outdoor space. REVIEW FROM 2 YEARS AGO: exquisite food: fresh and flavorful. Excellent service.

We recently dined at Bar Boulud. I appreciated the efficient and accommodating service. I ordered the Ōra king salmon and requested the bacon be excluded. The server handled my request seamlessly. My husband opted for the Entrecôte. While the food was delicious, it was a bit too salty for our taste. For dessert, we shared the Grapefruit Givré with sesame halva, rose loukum, and grapefruit sorbet—a dessert I first tried at Boulud Sud. It was just as delightful as I remembered and the highlight of the meal.

Amazing food, well presented and plenty of options at the decent prices. Ample indoor and outdoor seating and they have a good wine collection. Would recommend. We loved the chicken liver mousse (amazing flavor and it paired really well with the berry jam), the rainbow trout and the passion fruit cheesecake . The Frenchie burger, hazelnut ice cream, raspberry sorbet and winter salad were decent.

This restaurant, led by a famous chef, truly delivers on all fronts. The menu is creative and well-executed, and the wine list is excellent. Service was impressively fast and attentive without ever feeling rushed. The atmosphere inside is warm and welcoming, and the outdoor seating is just as inviting — comfortable, well-covered, and protected from bad weather. Don’t hesitate to reserve an outdoor table; it’s a great option. A top-notch dining experience all around.

I really enjoyed this place. The service and food were exceptional. It's definitely what you would expect from this restaurant. The service was great and the waiter was super attentive. The seafood dishes, paté, and dessert were especially amazing and I would come back just for those. Many guests also ordered the steak and frites so I'm definitely ordering that next time. For dessert, I highly recommend the petit four sampler, you won't be disappointed! Overall, a really great experience and definitely worth the money.
